Training Private InvestigatorPrivate investigator training schools could learn a lot from business marketing pros and even from risk taking entrepreneurs, too. I learned about taking statements, photography, casualty law, the rules of evidence and many other areas of knowledge that have served me well. Policework would be a good basic training as would be some time spent in a lawyer's office. Legal training is always invaluable. Most people who work in law enforcement agencies are probably also taught many technical things about investigation, but little about direct social skills and persuasive, selling-type skills, psychological subtleties and the like. For interviewing is an extremely subtle process and not the place for macho and strong armed tactics. It's really about exposing facts and truths that perpetrators are trying to deny and block out from consciousness - so it's a subtle, logical skill as well as an observational skill that's required. And self-mastery. Nerves of steel. Ever watched 'the closer' on TV? Or, 'Without a Trace?' CSI Miami? Complete success as a private investigator relies more on business sales training than on any one specific investigative skill. You need to get a good deal of co-operation out of people and you need to get them to trust you and to feel your authority. You need closing skills. Decisions are always problematic so offering people a choice instead of leaving the decision up to them - when they literally can't make one - is often the very best way to go. A simple two way choice. Do you want to do this the hard way, or the easy way? Are you going to explain this to me here or do we have to go down to the station? Do you prefer to sign your statement on the right side or the left side? Do you want coffee or tea? Did you see a large man or a short lady? Was it a yellow cab or a black cab? Making decisions involves risk so you have to help people by stimulating and informing their brains. Leading the process. Shall we start on your job this week or next week? Monday or Tuesday? Con artists who call themselves private investigators don't care about the problems of their clients and this type of trainee is not to be encouraged in the investigative profession at all as they bring us all down and degrade the public image of a private investigator. I hope and trust that this brief article has given you additional insight into the training needs of an effective P.I. who will be operating his own investigative business - - hopefully with a large measure of success!
